I’ve spent the past few days working on the sequin applique for the bodice.
I made a pattern, then cut that out of my leftover pink satin and the sequin fabric, folded the sequin fabric over the satin and stitched it down, pressed it, and then hand-sewed it into place. Then I went around the edges with my sequin trim.
I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. I still have more sequins to add – I’m scattering some single loose silver sequins to break-up the pattern of the fabric a bit.
I also made the sequin sashes for the front – they’re not attached yet, just pinned on (also didn’t put the pocket hoops on for this since I was just looking at the applique. So she looks a little deflated).
The sashes look ok. They’re a little wobbly and I’m guessing that’s because I backed them in organza instead of something heavy like satin. I didn’t think I had enough satin left to do that, though… I’ll have to wait and see what I have left fabric-wise if I want to redo them.
So all I have left is attaching the sashes, ironing, sewing the back of the straps in place, sewing the shoulder ruffle piece in place (it’s just tucked in in the photo above), and finish sewing on my single sequins. I’ll be done with the major sewing on this this weekend. I still have a MAJOR accessory to make but I think that’ll also be a weekend project.
Soooo I’m in a good place which means my brain is automatically thinking, “what else can I make?!?!” — I added a 4th new costume to my line-up earlier this week. I’m nuts.
But, really, it should be a simple project, I can make it for about $60 I think. The fabric I want for it is currently out of stock but expected back in stock tomorrow so I’ll order then, and once I do that, no going back. I’ll be able to use stuff out of my stash for the headpiece and belt. I have a pattern that will work if I frankenstein it to a different sleeve pattern.
Oh! And Ash and I got our Billie Piper photo-op bought. Yay!
So I’ve been kinda waiting on deciding what to do about my hair — because I wanted to see if Catherine Tate might come. But I took a look at FanExpo Canada’s line-up the other day (the other labor day con that often splits guests with Dcon), and she’ll be at that con Sat-Sun. Which would make it hard to split the weekend with Dcon. So that means I’m just going to touch-up my brunette hair for now, won’t have worry about figuring out new Leia hair.
And with that, my Dcon line-up for now stands at:
1. Mon Mothma
90% done. Getting wig trimmed up next week. Chase is working on my necklace pieces for me.
2. TFA Blue Dress Leia
75% done. Took the front seam apart last night — bought stabilizer on Monday so I’ll iron that on and get it sewn back up tonight and hopefully that makes for a nice, non-tortured seam. Then I just need to get the sleeves set in, and everything hemmed. I’m not going to have the ring at Dcon – asking for that for a bday present. Wig by Custom Wig Co!!
3. The Pink Ruffle Monster
60% done. The few things I need to finish on the dress I mentioned above. I just have the big accessory to make.
4. The Costume I Just Added
0%. Obviously. I’ll start talking about it once it’s locked in.
5. Dolores
Need to fix the wig but otherwise good to go.
6. Bespin Leia
Finished all my updates, ready to go.
7. Disgust
I need to take up the shoulder seam, but that’s it. I think I am going to take it and wear it – it’s the only “small” Disney costume I have at the moment that I feel like wearing. And it feels wrong to not take a Disney costume at all. It’s not a ton of painting — less than Starfire was and certainly less than Poison Ivy. I think it’ll be ok.
8. Donna
But which Donna?! I want to take Unicorn & the Wasp, I’m going to play with my Donna wig and see if it could manage a small up-do. If it doesn’t work I’ll take Runaway Bride. For our Billie Piper photo-op.
9. 1-2 downtime costumes
I do want to bring one or two small, comfy backup — it’ll probably just be Trillian, but I was also considering Arica or Janet Snakehole or regular Romana (without the cape). We’ll see.
I’m trying to keep my packing to 1-2 garment bags, one medium sized bin and a backpack. I plan on getting the bin out this weekend and start putting in what I can to get a feel for what I can fit. That’ll really make me figure out what’s coming and what’s not – I can’t bring the gigantic, fit-me-inside-it Dcon bin I usually do.
Also here’s a random photo of the flowers Chase brought me yesterday with Luna trying to eat them.
